the why

I haven’t written in a while. This is pretty common in the “blogosphere”. Real life has great notoriety for insinuating its influence into the best of our minds. So with mine as well.

The truth is, there are things cooking that I want to give their full due. Part of that is aesthetically-motivated: this site’s template is, at best, okay, and I usually don’t give it that much credit. So, to that end, I don’t want to post those big, overwrought, unwieldy pieces until the design fits them.

Oh, and I’m lazy. But let’s act like it’s my nobler cause at the heart of things, okay?

Still, there are cool things that don’t need long, wordy posts. This one is essentially a link dump of places you should see if you haven’t already.

Seek Knowledge

The Wikipedia is an open-source, user-editable, online encyclopedia that provides an enchanting amount of depth and breadth on all kinds of different things you may never have known were connected. For instance, there is an obvious connection between Kurt Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem and varying conceptions of God; but I kind of missed the connection until browsing the Wikipedia article on God and found an article about Gödel’s ontological proof of God. Go hither, and absorb.

Seek Good Stuff

You can download all kinds of ostensibly useful stuff from the internet; but, if you’re a Windows user, more often than not you’re in for some work removing “nasties” and the like. Enter CleanSoftware.org. If they don’t have what you need or are looking for, at the very least they set an example of the kind of software Windows users have come to regard as too much to ask for.

Be A Geek

If you want to read up on what’s up in the technology quarter, including business, hardware, software, accessories, games, and most anything else you might want to find, go to Ars Technica. Note that, with coverage for Windows, Mac OS X, and the various flavors of UNIX, among other things, they’ve taken back from Microsoft and Intel the term “PC” and redefined what makes a “personal computer”.

Design With Vision

Surprisingly, there are more sites dedicated to quality web development than you can shake a “Teach Yourself HTML in 24 Hours” book at; but one of the best places to get started is at zeldman.com. Jeffrey Zeldman is a devout advocate on behalf of the user, specifically with regard to web design, as well as more generally with regard to information architecture. Go forth and find yourself well-armed. Or something.

Laugh At Yourself And Others

Simply put, go read The Onion as part of a well-balanced diet of reasoned information and jovial skepticism.

I’m done for now.
