Quite behind the wave of popularity—like discovering BetaMAX, almost—I’ve decided to trek into the world of p2p music files. I am a defiant late adopter, and really can’t care to have the latest and greatest when, in all honesty, there’s precious little time to make proper use of the slightly-to-moderately older and greatest. I’ve quite a lot of behavioral inertia in this regard, and it keeps me saner and more pleasant than I would otherwise be. That is not to be confused with a proclamation of either sanity or a pleasant disposition. Asshat.

I’d thought that I’d let the rest of you fools—all 100 million of you—skitter through the mine tunnels, my canaries among the digerati, and find and squash the likely bugs and flakes common to the first five generations of any technology. Then I’d swoop in and enjoy the spoils of your fervent, populist efforts.

Little did I know that the world of p2p file sharing is still fairly rustic, antedeluvian at times, and still quite the rough and tumble frontier town. Finding a decent client and a decent set of networks to frequent is no mean feat. It’s quite easy to find large lists of clients and their corresponding networks; but, unless you’re looking for nothing more obscure than the latest 50 Cent or Jet tracks, by and large you’ve got to be equal parts diligent, patient, and otherwise occupied. I mean, Living Colour aren’t exactly obscure; but try finding “Revolution” (either a cover, or a cover of a cover—I was never sure which to consider it) and actually getting it.

Eventually, LimeWire came to the rescue. I’m sure Acquisition would’ve done a similarly nice job of it; but I’ll take basic features for no money any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Still, I’ll keep frequenting the music stores as much as I ever have. The generally consistent quality of audio and relative painlessness of getting music beats social networking. I still can’t likely find “Revolution”; but that’s okay. I know where to look to find good stuff.

What do you do for tunes?
