Deep

I am fascinated by the oceans and seas of the world, and of worlds yet to be found. The slow, pensive strength of these great planetary organs mesmerizes me. Some time ago, for a few months, I would find moments of near total darkness, close my eyes, and imagine as vividly as I could that I was floating in the depths of some great ocean, a fluid realm of such volume that greater creatures than the likes terrestrial waters could support found ample space to thrive. In this imagined space, these monstrosities would swim with deliberate, lethal grace, and I, submerged in blackness, had no means of safe egress, no hope of retributive strike. Like a nightmare having achieved consciousness, these creatures would stalk me, and I could only feel their approach as displacement.

Darkness can be hard to find. More’s the pity.

This one’s for you.

That’s simply beautiful. Looks like the boat was rockin’ pretty well; but the color and tonal ranges are very nice. Where is that?

Actually, I was standing off a small, jagged rock on the coast near Lisbon. It’s an overwhelming place to stand though, because it was the westernmost point of continental Europe, and the “small rock” I stood atop was the peak of an underwater cliff. But that feeling, standing in winds and waves that have been…going, since forever, to me it’s exactly the sort of thing you’re imagining here. Akin to the dreams I have of falling, or the feeling I get in a plane that takes a sudden drop - we are so very tiny in comparison to not only nature, but its forces.
